Goldie Browning’s twisted imagination and fascination with the paranormal began in early childhood with her grandmother’s ghost stories and her brother’s retelling of classic fairy tales, such as Snow White and the Seven Little Frankensteins and Cinderacula. 

Her first and favorite job was as a secretary at a military mortuary in Germany, followed by more mundane employment which included being a newspaper reporter, a real estate agent, a substitute school teacher, and a legal secretary.  She finally settled down to a long career as a courtroom deputy clerk for two federal judges before retiring and getting to do what she wants to do when she grows up—be a writer.

       I believe e-readers will like my book because it is fast-paced, exciting, scary, and romantic, all rolled up in one.  Night Journey is set at a real hotel in Arkansas purported to be the most haunted hotel in America, and was once the cancer hospital owned by real-life bad guy, Dr. Norman Baker.  Night Journey is a thrilling ride through time and back as heroine Emma Fuller has an accident, dies and is revived, but is left comatose.  While she’s in her coma, her soul is transported to 1938 where the spirits she’d heard about on the ghost tour are now real live people.  You’ll be turning the pages of your Kindle to find out what happens next.     

Q.  Why did you go indie?

            I’m so glad I went Indie, but I fought it for a long time, thinking I had to be published by The Big Guys.  I paid my dues, querying and collecting rejections and discovered that Night Journey didn’t fit into any of their niches.  The Big Guys don’t have time for books that don’t fit into their niches.  I’d just about given up after congestive heart failure almost got me, followed by a chain of other severe family illnesses.  Trying to sell your writing takes a lot of energy and I didn’t have any.  But then one day, out of the blue, one of my friends opened his own publishing company and asked me if he could publish Night Journey.  I’m so happy he asked me.

It’s pure escapism. The story begins in gritty reality but slowly descends into horror, romance and adventure.

I try to back my characters into impossible situations or give them difficult dilemmas to deal with, making the story more unpredictable. Hopefully I’ve achieved this as current reviews say the story is gripping and takes surprising twists and turns.

Q: Why did you go indie?

After submitting to several publishers, it became clear that vampire novels were not what they were looking for. But I still know lots of people who love to read them. So I thought, sod it then, I’ll do it myself. And I did.

Q: Who are your favorite authors in your genre?

Suzanne Collins, Anne Rice and Richard Matheson. For a brief time, I existed in their worlds.

Q: Why did you go indie?

I went indie back in 2003 with my first novel, Whale Song. I followed it with Divine Intervention (2004) and The River (2005). Then I did something everyone told me was impossible. I was picked up by a traditional publisher. Not only that, they took Whale Song, a previously self-published novel, which has received much movie interest.

When Lancelot's Lady made it to the semi-finals of Dorchester Publishing's "Next Best Celler" contest and then won an Editor's Choice Award from Textnovel, I knew I had to get it into the hands of readers who'd followed my journey with Lancelot's Lady. Publishing it myself as an ebook was a no-brainer. I've always been independent and am a shameless promoter.

What will eReaders like about your book?
I think it's fun and fresh and a little departure from the "bad-girl" urban fantasy genre. This is more like "trailer trash magic." A teen witch and her dead best friend have to save the world, but there are the usual complications of teenage life, like love spells, the unborn twin of James Dean, a gently oppressive mother, counselors, and creepy tentacle thingies that poke out of holes in the wall.

Why did you go indie?
I talked to a few writers and all the gloomy news about publishing made me decide I'd rather stay happy than worry about all that. This way I can keep having fun with the series and let it go wherever it wants. But I also had to make sure the book was in the best shape it could be in, so I had a number of people read it to catch errors.

Who are your favorite authors in your genre?
I like playful, imaginative books like pop-up books, Tim Burton, Roald Dahl, Debi Gliori, and Lemony Snicket. I'll try anything fresh and strange.

Q: What will e-readers like about your book? That it's an adventure in the truest sense of high fantasy - a quest book. But there's also a romance woven through. I think the cast of characters is pretty entertaining as well.

Q: Why did you go indie? This book had been turned down by every publisher that saw it, but I still believed. I'd had such good feedback from early readers - to the point that they would occasionally email me and ask when it would be available for purchase. I finally decided to publish it myself.

Q: Who are your favorite authors in the suspense, mystery, horror, and thriller fields? For romantic suspense, my go to is Roxanne St. Claire. Fun, sexy suspense books and I can NEVER figure out the villain! For mystery, I'm digging the new Gemma Halliday series. Horror and thriller aren't really my thing. I like to sleep at night.
